your research or evaluation

Please note our requirements
We are delighted when people research or evaluate Seeking Safety or any of our models. But please note the following requirements for research or evaluation that you plan to publish or report on (even if not published, e.g., report to a funding agency or government entity). If you're collecting data just for your own internal use but it won't be written up or shared with anyone else, we'd still recommend these points but they would not be required. But for any research that will potentially be written up and/or shared, it is required to:

(a) Obtain at least a 1-day initial training by one of our team.

(b)  Ensure that all counselors who will be conducting Seeking Safety for your research study are certified by our team to conduct it. This can be done by telephone and electronic methods.

(b)
Use our developer approved standards for assessing fidelity and supervision throughout the study. These too
can be done by phone and electronic methods.

Be sure to contact us before you begin your study ([email protected]). We will be happy to talk through the requirements with you. It will also speed things up if you can email a summary of your basic study design and measures.

See details on certification, fidelity, supervision, etc. and also our Training page.

The above points also hold true for any of the other models we developed (A Woman's Path to Recovery; Creating Change; and Finding Your Best Self).

Some additional points related to research of any kind. We can provide:
  • Our free fidelity scales for download
  • Materials for your grant application such as a letter of support and biosketch from Lisa Najavits or other team member. Note: please email your deadline; and the exact letter that you want both in content and format. The letter will be sent back on letterhead, signed, as a pdf. If you are planning publishable research, we will also work with you on a budget for the required training and certification.
  • Suggestions As you develop your study it can help to model your study on existing studies. Read some studies to inspire ideas for study design, measures, analyses, etc. Also, see: Najavits LM (2003). How to design an effective treatment outcome study. Journal of Gambling Studies, 19:317-337.
  • Research consultation: Dr. Lisa Najavits is a professor with many years' experience conducting outcome trials on Seeking Safety and other models. You can obtain formal consultation if desired, and she is also available informally by email  if you have brief questions. She can consult to grants, provide copies of "under review" articles, and help you get in touch with others already conducting studies on Seeking Safety or our other models.
